André Boraine is the former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria (UP) and as an emeritus professor, he currently holds a post-retirement contract as a professor in mercantile law. He is on the roll of practising attorneys and an honorary member of the South African Rescue and Insolvency Practitioners Association (SARIPA). André is the founding member of the former Centre for Advanced Corporate and Insolvency Law, based at the University of Pretoria and currently serves in the newly established Research Unit for Business Rescue and Insolvency Law. He is lecturing on the Insol Global Fellowship Programme and is a member of the Insol Academics Forum. Over the years he has taught various law subjects at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and he has involved himself with the practical legal training of candidate attorneys and insolvency practitioners. Since 2021 he also lectured the law modules on the newly established transdisciplinary M Phil programme in Insolvency and Business Rescue in collaboration with the Department of Business Management. He is keenly interested in comparative and international insolvency systems, with a particular focus on African systems. André was the INSOL Scholar for the 2008-2009 cycle and he is also a member of the IEEI and the acclaimed International Insolvency Institute. In 2011 the World Bank appointed him as a specialist consultant to assist in conducting a Report on the Observance of Standards and Codes (ROSC) relating to insolvency and creditors’ rights in South Africa, and he served as a member of the World Bank team in 2013 when it conducted a similar analysis of the Namibian insolvency system. In 2015 he reviewed the World Bank Report following a ROSC analysis of the Zimbabwean system and in 2021 the World Bank tasked him to evaluate the then Lesotho Insolvency Bill. In 2013 he served as a panellist at a UNCITRAL conference on insolvency systems for SMEs. A comprehensive joint paper on the topic followed and it was subsequently published in the 2015 International Insolvency Review. His broader research interests, apart from insolvency law, include the law of civil procedure, aspects of property and real security law as well as consumer law. He has published widely and is a co-author of a leading South African insolvency textbook, Meskin Insolvency Law. André is also a co-author of the South African chapter in the Collier International Business Insolvency Guide and a co-author of a chapter on the effect of the Bill of Rights on insolvency law in the Bill of Rights Compendium. He regularly presents papers at local and international conferences and holds a B-rating of the South African National Research Foundation In 2020 he was also recognised as one of the global top 500 leading lawyers in rescue and bankruptcy law in the American-based Lawdragon rankings. His interests outside academia include the restoration of classic Citroën cars and fly-fishing.
