Bio: 

Ben Cairns is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Restructuring in London.  He brings 16 years of experience in advising boards/other stakeholders and acting as officeholder in restructuring situations.  His primary areas of concentration are helping clients evaluate options, plan for and deliver financial restructuring solutions.

Mr. Cairns has worked with clients across a range of industries, including financial services (banking, insurance and investment management), real estate, mining, commodities, oil & gas and shipping.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Cairns spent 23 years with EY, where he most recently served as Partner in the Restructuring practice. As leader of the Financial Services Restructuring team in the UK and Ireland he worked closely with the government and regulators on a number of sensitive, high profile cases.

Major recent projects that Mr. Cairns has acted on include the ongoing Administration of Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander, the UK banking subsidiary of the Icelandic, Kaupthing banking group. He lead the planning and execution of this court appointment, subsequently managing the day-to-day run-off of the multi billion dollar loan book, encompassing NPLs, private banking, property, corporate lending and derivatives. Loan book collections total more than US$3billion and more than US$4.5billion has been paid out from the estate to date. The property book included 12 development properties in the Caribbean on Antigua, Barbados and St Lucia with a face value of c.US$250m.

He has acted as Provisional Liquidator of the Home Insurance Company and Administrator of the British & Commonwealth Merchant Banking group.

Mr. Cairns was joint Scheme Administrator of two separate Schemes of Arrangement to pay mis-selling redress to UK customers. With PRA approval, the schemes had a combined population of c.9million people.

Mr. Cairns has also advised the UK Government, Bank of England and PRA in respect of Northern Rock, from initial stabilisation through the first six months of Temporary Public Ownership, on restructuring options, the company's business plans and financial projections, as well as performance monitoring/reporting on a weekly basis.

Mr. Cairns is a chartered accountant and an Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales licensed Insolvency Practitioner. He sits on both the ICAEW Council, the senior oversight body of the Institute, and its Insolvency Technical Committee.
