Dear III Members, NextGens and Friends of III,

The III Executive Board has been working diligently with the Board of Directors, the Programs and Meetings Committee, and the Hong Kong Organizing Committee to ensure that the III's 20th Annual Meeting in Hong Kong is of the highest quality that attendees have come to expect. We have received a number of inquiries about whether the conference will take place as planned in light of the recent protests in Hong Kong. We wanted to confirm to you that the Annual Meeting is going to take place in Hong Kong and we are confident it will be a terrific conference. We have made a few modifications to the schedule as discussed below which should mitigate any travel disruptions in the event that the weekend protests continue next June.

As you consider your travel arrangements and planned attendance, we wanted to share the following helpful information:

  1. The Conference will go on as scheduled, with a slight change in the dates. Because the protests are typically on the weekends, the conference dates will be Wednesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 11 with the NextGen, Academic and Judicial Meetings on Tuesday, June 9.
  2. The Hong Kong committee as well as recent visitors from the U.S. and Europe have all indicated the area where the protests are being held are far removed from the Grand Hyatt and unless they were watching the news, did not realize protests were happening.
  3. Other major international conferences have been held over the last several weeks with no adverse consequences or issues.
  4. As previously contracted with the Grand Hyatt, ALL of the events, including opening reception and Legendary Dinner are being held at the Grand Hyatt, so there will not be a need for bus transportation to various events.
  5. The hotel has specific procedures in place to notify attendees of any travel disruptions or other information to protect the safety and information flow to all guests.
  6. We are working on arranging special transportation and airport waiting spaces for all sitting judges.
  7. The first day of the Conference will be highly focused on Mainland China and Asia regional issues which will foster the type of information and communication that is III's core mission. Just a sample of the topics already planned are:
  • Keynote Speaker, Secretary for Justice, Ms. Teresa Cheng
  • Mainland Panel
  • Hong Kong/Mainland Panel
    • The Use of Technology: Lessons from China
    • Restructuring Chinese Company Debt, The Off-Shore Dimension and Transnational Recognition
    • Investing in Special Situation and Distressed Debt In Asia
    • Judicial Cross-Border Issues

       8. Registration will be available in late December 2019.
