Nominations for Membership
in the International Insolvency Institute

The International Insolvency Institute is a limited membership non-profit association of leading insolvency professionals, judges, regulators and international lenders. The Institute’s goals and objectives are to promote and enhance fair and efficient international insolvency systems and procedures. The membership of the Institute is limited to 150 Members. Because of the limited size of the Institute, membership is only available by invitation from the Institute’s Board of Directors and, unfortunately, the Institute cannot accommodate all of the membership interest it receives.

The Institute’s membership is drawn from all segments of the international insolvency community and the minimum membership requirements will vary depending on whether an applicant is an insolvency practitioner or is a participant in the lending, investment and credit industry or is from the public service (judicial, academic and regulatory).

The minimum requirements for membership in the Institute are:

1. Practitioners: - The minimum requirements for membership in the Institute for practitioners are a minimum of 15 to 20 years experience and practice in insolvency matters. Applicants should have several years’ participation in one or more leading international or domestic professional associations, either in an association dedicated specifically to insolvency or in insolvency-related committees or subsections of larger organizations. Service in the leadership of any of these organizations would be highly relevant for potential membership in the Institute.

2. Lending, Investment and Credit Professionals: - Potential lending, investment and credit industry applicants should be representatives of their institutions and should have responsibility for senior transactions of an international nature or senior responsibility for domestic transactions in a particular country or region.

3. Academics: - Potential academic applicants for membership in the Institute will normally have been in academia for at least ten years and will have an appropriate list of published and unpublished articles and research. In the nomination process described below, it would be preferable for academic applicants to be nominated by academic Members of the Institute although supporting nominations from practitioner Members are, of course, also encouraged.

4. Judicial: - Potential Judicial applicants for membership in the Institute will normally have had several years of judicial experience in bankruptcy, insolvency and commercial issues and will have and interest in bankruptcy and insolvency systems and processes in their country.

5. Regulatory Professionals: - Potential Regulatory applicants for membership in the Institute will have senior responsibility in the administration of insolvency-related systems and procedures in their country.

The Institute has a broad range of projects and activities, some of which are described in other portions of this web site, and Members are encouraged to take part in at least one Institute project or activity. Potential members with specific areas of interest within the international insolvency, secured transactions and creditors’ remedies areas are particularly encouraged to identify projects within their specific areas of interest which they would intend to pursue.

To pursue an application for membership in the Institute, an applicant must be nominated by at least two Members of the Institute and the nomination must be sponsored by two of the Institute’s Directors. The names of the Institute’s Directors and the Institute’s Membership list are posted on this web site. An application for membership should be forwarded together with the appropriate letters of nominations and sponsorship to the Executive Director of the Institute, Suzanne Bingham, at the address set out below. The application should be accompanied by a letter from the applicant detailing their particular experience and interests in the insolvency area and should be supported by biographical information, professional history, details of significant engagements and any other supporting information which the applicant considers appropriate. Additional references from leading figures in the insolvency area (which may include non-Members as well as Members of the Institute) are also important and are encouraged. Applications are considered by the Institute’s Board of Directors and applications will be maintained in strict confidence by the Board.
